Jackets take No. 3 Noles to Extras

THE FLATS – Georgia Tech softball (15-7, 0-5 ACC) battled No. 3 Florida State (22-1, 4-1 ACC) in a doubleheader, falling 4-1 in game one and 6-2 in game two through 12 innings on Friday at Mewborn Field.

The Jackets only allowed the Seminoles to score in one inning in game one and held the Noles scoreless through nine innings in game two. Florida State took a two-run lead in the top of the 10th in game two, but Tech evened the tally with a pair of runs in the bottom half before the Seminoles pulled away with four more runs in the 12th.

Game One: After a pair of scoreless innings, Florida State heated up in the top of the third. The Seminoles broke the stalemate scoring their first run on a Jacket miscue, followed by back-to-back home runs for three more scores to jump out to a 4-0 lead. Tech narrowed the Florida State lead in the bottom of the fifth as freshman center fielder Ella Edgmon led off the inning with a single, stealing second and making her way home on a sacrifice fly by graduate first baseman Tricia Awald. The Yellow Jackets would hold the Noles at four for the final two innings, but were unable to get another run across the plate as Florida State finished on top, 4-1.

Game Two: Both squads were dominant in the circle throughout most of the game as neither side managed to plate a run until extra innings. In the 10th, Florida State struck first with a pair of solo shots. Georgia Tech rallied with its back against the wall in the bottom of the frame, using a two-RBI double off the bat of Awald to knot things up. The Seminoles moved back in front in the top of the 12th, inching ahead on a fielder’s choice before increasing the advantage with a three-run home run. The Jacket bats were unable to answer in their final trip to the plate, resulting in a 6-2 win for the Noles in 12 innings.

Game Notes

  • Junior hurler Blake Neleman had a stellar day through both games, posting 1.24 ERA as she heaved 11 ½ innings while allowing two earned runs on three hits with 13 strikeouts.
  • Neleman tossed 4 1/3 hitless innings while picking up six punchouts in game one before pitching seven innings and conceding two runs on three hits while sitting down seven Seminoles.
  • Awald led the Jackets at the dish on the day, going 3-for-6 with a double, three RBI and a walk, including a sacrifice fly for Tech’s only run in game one and two RBI to extend game two through the 10th
  • The 12-inning marathon in game two between the Jackets and Seminoles nearly tied the longest game in program history, which lasted 13 innings against Syracuse in 2016.
