Jackets Sting Owls, 5-2

THE FLATS โ€“ย Georgia Tech softball (24-9, 5-7 ACC) rose above Kennesaw State (10-18, 2-3 ASUN) for its eighth straight win in the form of a 5-2 victory on Wednesday night at Mewborn Field. The Yellow Jackets used a three-run spurt in the bottom of the fourth and sound pitching to come out on top.

Junior utility player Emma Kauf and freshman left fielder Auburn Dupree led the Jackets at the dish, each going 2-for-3 with a run scored as Kauf picked up a double and Dupree led the squad with a pair of RBI. In the circle, junior hurler Chandler Dennis got the start and the win as she tossed five innings, collecting three strikeouts as she allowed two runs on four hits. Junior right-hander Blake Neleman entered in relief and got the save, closing out the final two innings as she tallied three punchouts of her own and kept the Owls hitless.

Kennesaw State climbed aboard first in the top of the third on an RBI single, but Georgia Tech came right back in the bottom of the frame with a two-out rally to even things up. Kauf blasted a double off the wall in right center, allowing graduate first baseman Tricia Awald to drive her home on an RBI single of her own.

The Jackets carried their momentum into the following frame, adding three more runs to leap ahead. After a leadoff error, sophomore shortstop Jin Sileo pushed home the first run of the inning while legging out a triple. Dupree followed with an RBI single through the right side, and sophomore third baseman Mallorie Black later drove in Dupree, resulting in Techโ€™s 4-1 advantage.

The Owls inched closer in the top of the fifth with another RBI single, but Tech would match the run in the bottom half. Following back-to-back singles by senior second baseman Bailee Zeitler and sophomore catcher Sandra Beth Pritchett, Dupree stepped in and again singled a run home to move the White and Gold back up to a three-run lead. The Yellow Jackets would maintain that lead throughout the final two innings, resulting in a 5-2 triumph.
