THE FLATS – Georgia Tech softball (15-9, 2-1 ACC) outmatched Georgia Southern (10-12, 0-0 SBC) in an 11-3, mercy-rule victory through five innings on Tuesday at Mewborn Field. The Yellow Jackets won their seventh of the last eight games in the process, now owning back-to-back run-rule triumphs over the Eagles while increasing their series win streak to eight dating back to 2010.
Senior hurler Chandler Dennis was stellar in the circle through the day, coming an out shy of a no hitter after tossing 4.2 hitless innings. With the final out recorded, Dennis (9-3) earned the complete-game win as she allowed no earned runs and just two hits, also adding four strikeouts through five innings of work.
At the dish, four Yellow Jackets picked up multiple hits on the day. Junior third baseman Mallorie Black led the way at a perfect 2-for-2 with a double and a two-run bomb to move into the team lead with six dingers this season. Black also crossed the plate more than any other Jacket on the day with three runs scored. Senior utility player Emma Kauf nearly matched Black as she also went 2-for-2 with a pair of RBI, but her longball grazed the top of the wall in left, resulting in her team-high third triple of the season and a pair of runs scored. Sophomore second baseman Grace Connelly also had a solid outing, going 2-for-3 with an RBI and a couple of runs scored. Sophomore outfielder Ella Edgmon returned to the lineup as well with a 2-for-3 day, including a run scored, to round out the multi-hit Yellow Jackets.
After a quiet first inning, Black led off the bottom of the second with a double to center, later breaking the stalemate on a sacrifice fly for a 1-0 Tech lead after two.
The Jackets began to break things open in the third, sending in another run on a throwing error and one more on a groundout by junior designated player Sara Beth Allen. Black followed that by going yard with a runner on to increase Georgia Tech’s advantage to 5-0.
The Yellow Jackets took full control of the contest with six more runs in the bottom of the fourth. Kauf’s two-RBI triple got the scoring started in the inning, followed by Connelly’s RBI single that put the White and Gold ahead, 8-0. As the wheels came off for the Eagles, two more runs scored on fielding miscues before an RBI single off the bat of freshman outfielder Paige Vukadinovich secured an 11-0 lead.
The Eagles would fight back with a last gasp down to their final out, poking an RBI single followed by a double that scored two more, but Dennis would force the final out, resulting in an 11-3, mercy-rule victory through five innings for the Yellow Jackets.
