THE FLATS – Georgia Tech women’s basketball is set to return to Bimini, Bahamas for the 2017 Junkanoo Jam presented by Hilton at Resorts World Bimini this November. The eight-team field with brackets for the 14th annual tournament was released Tuesday by tournament directors. The Yellow Jackets will compete in the Junkanoo Division and open the tournament on Nov. 24 against Penn.
“We are excited to be playing in the Junkanoo Jam against two great teams,” head coach MaChelle Joseph stated. “This is the type of challenge our team needs early in the season to prepare for ACC play.”
The three-day tournament will take place Thursday, Nov. 23 through Saturday, Nov. 25. The tournament field will include Baylor, Central Michigan, Georgia Tech, Iowa State, Missouri State, Penn, San Diego State, and Tulane. The Junkanoo Jam features two four-team divisions in a two-game bracket competing for separate tournament championships.
Baylor, Georgia Tech, Missouri State, and Penn will compete in the Junkanoo Division. Missouri State and Baylor will tip off the 2017 tournament on Thursday, Nov. 23 at 4 p.m. Penn and Georgia Tech will play their first game on Friday, Nov. 24 with a 1 p.m. scheduled tip off. The losing teams will compete in the third-place game on Saturday, Nov. 25 at 1 p.m., followed by the championship game at 3:15 p.m.
Central Michigan, Iowa State, San Diego State, and Tulane will compete in the Bimini Division. The opening game of the division tips off at 3:45 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 24, at 3:45 p.m. between the Golden Waves and the Cyclones. San Diego State and Central Michigan will face off in the following game at 6 p.m. The losing teams from the opening round will battle for third place Saturday, Nov. 25 at 5:45 p.m. The championship game of the division concludes the 2017 Junkanoo Jam with a scheduled 8 p.m. tip off.

The Junkanoo Jam is held at Gateway Christian Academy less than a quarter mile from the resort. The gymnasium is a privately-owned and air-conditioned gym. Additionally, the gym offers fiber-optics internet connectivity.
Tech took part in the 2016 tournament, claiming the Freeport Division title with wins over Dayton and Mizzou. The Yellow Jackets will be making their third appearance in the Bahamas having taken part in the Bahamas Sunshine Tournament in 2011-12.
