Jackets Return to Conference Action Wednesday in Chapel Hill

ATLANTA – The Georgia Tech women’s basketball team will return to action this Wednesday when it travels to Chapel Hill, N.C. to take on the North Carolina Tar Heels at 7 p.m. at Carmichael Auditorium. The Jackets enter the contest against the fourth-ranked Tar Heels with an 11-5 record and are seeking their first ACC win of the season after starting 0-3 in conference play.

North Carolina is 16-0 on the season and boasts a 3-0 mark in conference play with wins over Miami, Clemson and 25th-ranked NC State to open up its ACC campaign.

The game can be heard in Atlanta on the Georgia Tech ISP Sports Radio Network, WREK-91.1 FM, and online at www.wrek.org. Livestats for the game will also be available at www.ramblinwreck.com.

Tech has fallen by an average of just six points per game over its last two contests, against No. 2 Duke and Kentucky in the Russell Athletic Shootout. The Jackets currently stand second in the ACC in field goal and three-point field goal percent defense and stand fourth in scoring defense.

The Jackets and Tar Heels will be squaring off for the 55th time in history, with UNC winning 43 of the 54 previous meetings. Tech is looking for its first win against the Heels since 2002, and is 5-19 against the home team at Carmichael Auditorium.

Stephanie Higgs currently leads the league in scoring in ACC games, with an average of over 17 points in the Jackets’ three contests against conference foes. She is second on the team in scoring this season (11.9 ppg) behind Chioma Nnamaka, who is averaging 12.0 points per game.

Tech has shot 40 percent from the field thus far this season, led by Jessica Williams, who has converted on over 52 percent of her shots. Janie Mitchell and Jacqua Williams both lead Tech in three-point shooting, connecting on over 45 percent from beyond the arc, while Mitchell paces Tech from the charity stripe, where she is shooting 80 percent.

Mitchell also leads the team in rebounding, with an average of 7.4 per game, while senior Kasha Terry has 5.1 rebounds per game and has recorded 33 blocks this season. Sophomore point guard Jill Ingram leads Tech in both assists (49) and steals (38) while Higgs is second in assists (33) and tied for second with Jacqua Williams in steals (31).

Following the game at UNC, Tech will return to Atlanta to host Wake Forest in a televised game Sunday at 1 p.m.
