Jackets Peel Off in Extras for Series Sweep Over Orange

THE FLATS โ€“ย Georgia Tech softball (23-9, 5-7 ACC) earned its first ACC series sweep of the season with a walk-off, 2-1 triumph over Syracuse (17-12, 1-8 ACC) on Sunday afternoon at Mewborn Field. In a quiet day for the bats on both sides, Tech rallied in the seventh to extend the game into extras before taking advantage of a wild pitch in the bottom of the ninth to seal the victory and series sweep.

Senior right fielder Kennedy Cowden sparked the Jackets at the dish, knocking a single through the right side in her only plate appearance as she later blitzed home for the game-winning run. Freshman left fielder Auburn Dupree also had a successful day at the plate, leading the team going 2-for-3.

In the circle, junior hurler Blake Neleman tossed a full regulation game, going seven innings while allowing just one run on four hits and tallying five strikeouts. Junior slinger Chandler Dennis took over in extras, blanking the Orange through two innings while adding a pair of punchouts.

Mirroring the first two games of the series, the early goings were dominated in the circle, resulting in four scoreless innings. Syracuse got on the board first in the top of the fifth by way of an RBI single, but the Jackets rallied in the bottom of the seventh as Dupree singled to send home sophomore shortstop Jin Sileo, knotting things up. With both squads locked 1-1 after seven, Tech regained momentum in the bottom of the ninth. Cowden cracked a leadoff single to get the Jackets started, followed by a walk and sacrifice bunt to move both runners into scoring position. Cowden then bolted for the plate from third on a wild pitch, scoring the game-winning run for a walk-off, 2-1 win and series sweep in favor of the White and Gold.
