Jackets Open Outdoor Season, Host Yellow Jacket Invitational

THE FLATS – Georgia Tech outdoor track and field kicks off its season on Friday when it hosts the Yellow Jacket Invitational on March 15-16 at the Griffin Track and Field Facility.

The Yellow Jackets will join Alabama A&M, Clemson, Dartmouth, Eastern Michigan, Georgia, Georgia State, High Point, IUPUI, Jacksonville State, Kennesaw State, Louisville, Marshall, Mercer, Middle Tennessee State, North Carolina, Pittsburgh, and Rutgers in the two-day meet, beginning on Friday at 6:00 p.m. with the hammer throw. Following the hammer throw the 5000m event will conclude day one.

Field events on the second day begin at 11 a.m. with all running events beginning at 12:30 p.m.

Georgia Tech is coming off a strong indoor season that featured all-American Bria Matthews and NCAA qualifier Jeanine Williams. Matthews qualified in the triple jump where she would finish in first in the ACC Indoor Championships earning all-ACC honors, and finished fifth in the NCAA Indoor Championships with a personal-best mark of 13.50 meters. Williams ran the 60m hurdles after finishing in second in the ACC Indoor Championships and was named all-ACC. She would finish in 15th at the NCAA Indoor Championships with a time of 8.22.

Finishing up the indoor season in the ACC Indoor Championships, Avery Bartlett and Ben Jean both finished in the top three in their events and were named all-ACC. Bartlett finished second in the 800 meter event with a blazing time of 1:48.39, while Jean finished third in the 400 meter dash with a time of 47.22.

Daniel Pietsch was named second team all-ACC for his 6th place finish in the 400 meter dash finishing with a time of 47.66, while Nahom Solomon finished his career at the ACC Indoor Championships finishing 8th in the 3000m event with a time of 8:06.59.

Amy Ruiz represented the women’s team well finishing 8th in the mile with a time of 4:45.78, where she was once again within grasp of the school record in the mile.
