THE FLATS – Georgia Tech’s offense exploded for a season-high 20 runs on 19 hits in a 20-7 drubbing of the No. 10 Duke Blue Devils in ACC Coastal Division play on Friday night at Russ Chandler Stadium.
The 20-run outing for the Jackets is the first 20-run game for Tech since a 21-3 home win over Savannah State on May 10, 2016.
It was the first time this season that the Blue Devils have allowed more than 10 runs in a game, and the first time since Tech defeated Duke 21-5 on April 3, 2010 at Russ Chandler Stadium that the Blue Devils have allowed 20 or more runs in a contest.
The Jackets did most of the damage with two big innings, a five-run third and a 12-run fifth, with the latter being the first 12-run inning for a Tech team since May 14, 2005 versus Virginia Tech in a 27-2 win.
With his first-inning base hit, senior Wade Bailey (3-for-6, 2 2B, 3 RBIs, 2 runs) increased his hitting streak to 10-straight games and his on-base streak to 25-straight contests, while his two doubles gives him 60 for his career, passing Nomar Garciaparra and Matt Gonzalez to move into a tie for fifth all-time in Tech history with Steven Blackwood.
Freshman Colin Hall’s (2-for-5, HR, 2B, 3 RBIs, 3 runs) three-run home run in the third pushes his on-base streak to 17-straight games, while catcher Joey Bart (2-for-4, HR, BB, 2 RBIs, 3 runs) reached base safely for the 12th-straight game and registered his team-leading 16th home run of the season.
Sophomore Kyle McCann (4-for-5, HR, 2B, 3 RBIs, 4 runs) hit his 15th home run of the season and matched Bailey and Hall with three RBIs each, while Austin Wilhite (1-for-4, 2B, BB, 3 RBIs) and Tristin English (1-for-4, HR, BB, 3 RBIs, 2 runs) also had three RBIs apiece in the blowout win.
Tech starting pitcher Connor Thomas (7-3) picked up the win, as the sophomore hurler allowed four runs, three of which were earned, on seven hits, one walk and four strikeouts over 5.0-complete innings.
For the Blue Devils offensively, catcher Chris Proctor (2-for-4, 2 RBIs, run) and outfielder Griffin Conine (3-for-4, 2B, RBI, run) each had multiple hits for the game, while six other players had one hit overall in the loss.
On the mound, Ryan Day (5-3) suffered the loss, allowing nine runs, eight earned, on nine hits, three walks and two strikeouts over 4.1 innings of work.
The Blue Devils scored one run in the first, second and third innings to take a 3-0 lead into the bottom of the third where the Jackets swarmed ahead with a two-run single by McCann and a three-run home run to right center field from Colin Hall to take a 5-3 lead into the fourth.
After Duke cut the GT lead to one on a Conine RBI single, the Jackets blew the game wide open in the bottom of the fifth with a 12-run inning, which included 12-straight Jackets reaching base safely in the frame.
The 12-run inning started with a McCann solo home to right field and included a three-run double by Bailey, an RBI single from Chase Murray, a Bart two-run home run to deep left field, a bases clearing three-run double off the wall by Austin Wilhite and a Nick Wilhite RBI single.
English added a monster three-run home run in the bottom of the sixth for good measure as the Jackets swarmed the Blue Devils for the 20-7 ACC Coastal Division win.
The Jackets improved to 16-5 on the season when posting a big inning – four runs or more – for the contest and now sit at 25-9 overall on the year in home games inside Russ Chandler Stadium.
Georgia Tech (31-24, 14-15 ACC) and the No. 10 Duke Blue Devils (38-14, 17-11 ACC) will wrap up the 2018 regular season tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m. at Russ Chandler Stadium. Senior Day festivities will take place on Saturday afternoon prior to first pitch.
