Jackets' Mahoney Advances to 1500-meter Final at Track Nationals

PALO ALTO, Calif. – Georgia Tech junior All-American Brendon Mahoney advanced to Sunday’s 1500-meter final with a strong showing in the opening round of the event Friday at the USA Track and Field National Championships at Stanford’s Cobb Track and Angell Field.

Mahoney, who recently competed in the 1500 meters at the NCAA Championships, recorded a time of 3:49.19 to place third in heat one. The top four finishers in each heat and the next four best times moved on to the final, which will be shown as a part of ESPN2’s coverage that airs from 4-5:30 p.m. Sunday. Action will also be shown from 4-6 p.m. Saturday on NBC. The top three finishers in the final advance to the 2003 World Championships in Paris.

In other action, both junior Amandi Rhett and senior Bryan Swarn were eliminated in their respective events. Rhett placed 16th in the semifinals of the 100 meters in 11.97, while Swarn was 15th in the semis of the 400 meters with a time of 46.51. Both Jackets advanced to the second round after solid performances Thursday. Rhett will run the opening round of the 200 meters Saturday.

Action opens Saturday with the junior women’s high jump at 11:10 a.m. Eastern. Tech freshman Chaunte Howard, who recently placed second in the high jump at the NCAA Championships, is slated to compete. Other Jackets in action in junior competitions Saturday include freshmen Brandy Depland (long jump) and Rob Kuhn (1500 meters).
