ATHENS, Ga. – Georgia Tech men’s tennis recorded 12 wins on day two of the Bulldog Scramble on Saturday, pulling together six doubles victories and six singles wins. The squad will begin the final day of the scramble on Sunday at 10 a.m. with a round of doubles followed by a round of singles.
Singles Update: The Yellow Jackets grabbed six singles wins on the day. Elijah Melendez kicked it off with a 6-2, 6-4 upset of No. 88 Maksim Kan of Wake Forest. Andrew Li won his third match of the tournament with a 6-2, 7-6 (5) win over Georgia’s Robert Loeb. Phillip Gresk got a win under his belt with a 6-4, 6-2 rout of Miami’s Dane Dunlap. Daniel Yun tallied a win for the Jackets, dropping a 6-3, 6-1 decision on Miami’s Niclas Genovese. Michael Kay remained undefeated in his singles matches with a 6-3, 7-5 win over Georgia’s Alex Phillips. Cole Fiegel topped Princeton’s Jimmy Wasserman, 4-6, 7-6 (4), 6-2. Carlos Benito fell to Georgia’s Jan Zielinski, 7-6 (5), 3-6, 6-2. Chris Yun fell to No. 58 Christian Langmo of Miami, 6-3, 3-6, 6-4.
Doubles Update: The squad kicked off the day with two rounds of doubles, coming away with six wins on the day. Kay and Melendez took down Kevin Bondar and Nile Clark of Miami, 8-1. Fiegel and Li continued their run with an 8-5 win over Emil Reinberg and Walker Duncan of Georgia and an 8-1 rout of South Carolina’s Sam Swank and Alex Fennell. Chris Yun and Melendez topped the pairing of Cameron (South Carolina) and Geneovese (Miami), 8-2. Gresk and Daniel Yun defeated Princeton’s Alex Day and Tom Colautti, 8-6. Veterans Benito and Kay teamed up to take down host Georgia’s Andy Martinez and Alex Phillips, 8-5.
Head coach Kenny Thorne says: “We won matches we should win and lost a couple we should have won. All the guys are showing improvements but with our goals, that is not enough. We won’t settle this season.”
