ATLANTA – The 2005-06 Georgia Tech women’s basketball team will open the Atlantic Coast Conference portion of their season by hosting the Miami Hurricanes this Thursday at 7 p.m. at Alexander Memorial Coliseum. The game will be broadcast on CSS (Comcast SportsNet) and on the Georgia Tech ISP Sports Radio Network (91.1 WREK-FM) in Atlanta. Livestats for the game will be available at www.ramblinwreck.com.
The Jackets and Hurricanes have met on five prior occasions, with Miami holding the 4-1 edge in the series. Tech has played just one of those games at Alexander Memorial Coliseum, in which the Hurricanes were 73-64 winners in the first round of the 2002 WNIT. The two teams split two games a season ago, with Tech taking the first in Miami, 62-46, while the Hurricanes eliminated the Jackets from postseason play with a 60-58 victory in the 2005 ACC Tournament.
The Jackets are 7-19 in conference openers, but four of those seven wins have come in the friendly confines of Alexander Memorial Coliseum, where Tech is 9-0 this season. Georgia Tech has won both of its season openers under current head coach MaChelle Joseph.
Tech’s 11-1 start this season is the best start under Joseph and the program’s best beginning to a season since going 11-1 to start the 2002-03 campaign, which was the last time that the Jackets appeared in the NCAA Tournament.
The Jackets are led by a pair of sophomores in Chioma Nnamaka (11.7 ppg) and Janie Mitchell (11.3 ppg, 7.5 rpg), while junior Stephanie Higgs is averaging 10.8 points, 1.9 assists and 2.0 steals per game. Senior Kasha Terry leads the team in blocks, with 1.9 per game, while sophomore point guard Jill Ingram is pacing the squad with 3.3 assists and 2.4 steals per game.
Following the contest against Miami, the Jackets will hit the road to face Clemson on Sunday at 3 p.m.
