ATLANTA– – Looking to gauge how much progress has been made through seven practices, the Georgia Tech football team will hold its first scrimmage of the spring Saturday morning at Rose Bowl Field.
The scrimmage, which is open to the public, will begin at approximately 10:40 a.m.
“We’re trying to get everybody some work tomorrow,” said Tech head coach Chan Gailey after Friday’s workout. “We’re trying to limit the number of plays for each group to around 30 for the first and second groups and a little less than that for the thirds.
“It will be ones against ones,” he added, meaning that the first-team offense will compete against the first-team defense, and so on with the second and third teams.
All four Tech quarterback–juniors Andy Hall (Cheraw, S.C.), A.J. Suggs (Powder Springs, Ga.) and Brian Camp (Dublin, Ga.) and redshirt freshman Damarius Bilbo (Moss Point, Miss.)–will play in the scrimmage. Gailey said he and his staff had not yet decided exactly how to allocate the first-and second-team repetitions among Suggs, Hall and Bilbo, who have yet to separate themselves in the battle for the starting job.
“They’ll just roll through and all get repetitions,” Gailey said. “We’re going to let each one go out and try to execute a drive rather than say eight plays no matter what. It’s ones, twos and threes, and you go out and try to keep the drive going or you come out. We’re trying to simulate game conditions as much as we can.
“You’re trying to find out who can take what we’ve taught thus far and can put it into practice in a game-type situation. Who can take everything and put it all together. We do segments in practice, and now it’s time to put it all together.”
Several players are expected to miss the scrimmage with minor injuries, including running back Sidney Ford (Lindale, Ga.), rib injury, safety James Butler (Bainbridge, Ga.), hamstring, and cornerback Albert Poree (New Orleans, La.), hip pointer.
