ATLANTA – Junior Sarah Wood (12-6) and freshman Lacey Richardson (6-4) combined for a shutout and sophomore Savannah Brown went 1-for-3, with a home run (9), to lead Georgia Tech (34-14) past Georgia Southern (21-23), 8-0, at Glenn Field on Tuesday afternoon.
Wood threw the first 3.0 innings, scattering three hits, while Richardson worked the final 2.0 innings, allowing just one hit. Sophomore Aileen Morales and freshman Blair Shimandle each drove in two runs for the Jackets.
The Yellow Jackets broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the fourth inning with five runs on four hits. Morales drove in two runs with a double off the right field fence, Shimandle, and sophomores Kristina Hull and Stephanie Butler each drove in runs for the Jackets.
Brown smacked her ninth home run of the season in the bottom of the fifth inning to increase Tech’s lead to six, 6-0. Shimandle singled with a runner at third base to push the seventh run across and senior Christine Sheridan drove in the final run of the game with a single to left field as the Jackets won, 8-0, in six innings.
Tech scored eight runs, on seven hits and had no errors, while GSU had three hits and committed one error.
The Yellow Jackets will host Furman for a non-conference doubleheader on Wednesday, April 12. The games are scheduled for a 2 p.m. start at Glenn Field.
