DURHAM, N.C. — Unable to combat a slow start, Georgia Tech Volleyball (6-7, 1-1 ACC) fell to Duke (10-3, 2-0) 3-0 in Cameron Indoor Stadium on Sunday afternoon. The Jackets return home to host NC State and North Carolina next weekend.
Head coach Michelle Collier says:
“We need to have a stronger mentality to do what is necessary to compete at this level and our potential. It goes back to doing the little things, being disciplined and being tough on the road. This group is strong, they work hard and they are resilient. I know we will grow and figure out together how to be more consistent.”
How it happened:
The Jackets came out to a slow start, trading points with the Blue Devils before a 4-0 run in the first gave Duke the 7-3 advantage. The Jackets tried to get something going, calling a timeout but were only able to get within three at 10-7 before another run gave Duke the 17-7 advantage. That run put the set out of reach for the Jackets and the Blue Devils took it at 25-13.
The Jackets bounced back in the second, going point for point with the Blue Devils and seeing 10 ties. The teams sat at 16-16 as Duke took two in a row to edge ahead to 18-16. Tech called a timeout to slow Duke’s momentum, which appeared to work as Tech came back within one off a kill from senior Gabriela Stavnetchei. However the Blue Devils took three in a row to maintain their lead and the Jackets dropped the set at 25-18.
It was all Duke coming out of the gate in the third; the Blue Devils took the lead at 3-2 and used a 6-1 run to take control of the set. The Jackets were only able to bring the tally within five at 17-12 before Duke sealed the set at 25-14 with an 8-2 run.
