KENNESAW, Ga. – Despite four runs over the final three innings, No. 24 Georgia Tech baseball was unable to climb all the way back from an early deficit and fell 10-5 on Sunday afternoon at Stillwell Stadium.
The Yellow Jackets (21-18) fell behind 4-1 in the first inning before the Owls (26-13) added a sixth run in the fifth to create the four-run lead. Tech then scored three in the top of the seventh and one in the ninth, while KSU tacked on five more runs to finish the game.
At the plate, Luke Waddell led the Jackets with a 3-for-5 day, including a double, two RBI and a home run in the opening at-bat of the game. Drew Compton (2-for-4) also crushed a homer while Justyn-Henry Malloy (2-for-3) and Tres Gonzalez (two-run homer) also produced on the day.
Starter LHP Dalton Smith (2-1) received the loss, surrendering four runs on five hits in just 1.1 innings before RHP Zach Maxwell quieted the game with two innings of two-hit baseball where he punched out six. LHP Luke Bartnicki and RHP Dawson Brown finished the game with a combined five earned runs scored across six hits.
Kennesaw State was led by Garrett Hodges, who went 3-for-5 on the day while LHP Ryan Kennedy (6-0) received the win, allowing just one run on four hits in 5.1 innings of work before RHP Kolby Johnson got his sixth save of the year.
Georgia Tech remains home and returns to ACC action when it hosts Clemson next weekend on May 7-9 at Mac Nease Baseball Park at Russ Chandler Stadium. First pitches are scheduled for 6 p.m., 1 p.m., and 1 p.m., respectively. The entire series will be broadcast live on WREK 91.1 FM with Friday’s game on ACC Network Extra and Saturday and Sunday’s game broadcast on the ACC’s Regional Sports Networks.
