MARIETTA, Ga. – Junior Jessica Sallinger tossed four shutout innings and junior Liz Bartle went 3-for-3 with four runs batted in and a home run to vault No. 21 Georgia Tech over Western Kentucky, 13-0 (5), this afternoon at the Buzz Classic. The Yellow Jackets will play in a single-elimination bracket beginning at 8 p.m. tonight.
Tech broke through in the top of the first inning as junior Katie Donovan singled with runners on first and second as the Jackets led 1-0. Junior Liz Bartle singled up the middle to plate the second run and the Jackets pulled off a double steal to push the score to 3-0. After a walk to load the bases junior Kirin Kumar singled to left field to score two more runs as the Yellow Jackets extended their lead to five.
The Jackets pushed two more runs across in the third inning on a RBI single by Bartle and another successful run down to increase the lead to 7-0.
Barle gave the Rambling Wreck a 9-0 advantage on a three-run home run to left field in the top of the fourth inning and senior Sara Wissmann followed with another home run for the Jackets as Tech went back-to-back for the second time in the tournament, to jump out in front 10-0.
Tech tallied two more runs in the fifth inning as Donovan singled up the middle to score Reddick and junior Kirin Kumar scored after a base hit to the shortstop.
Freshman Sarah Wood entered the game for the Jackets in the fifth inning on the mound and retired the side.
Georgia Tech dropped a 2-1 decision to Nicholls State earlier today as the Colonels won Pool 1. The Yellow Jackets will advance to bracket play tonight at 8 p.m. as the second-place finisher in their respective pool.
