Jackets Edged By No. 21 Virginia Tech, 4-3

March 20, 2009

BLACKSBURG, Va – – Despite three big wins in singles play, the Georgia Tech men’s tennis team fell 4-3 to No. 21 Virginia Tech Friday afternoon at the Burrows/Burleson Tennis Center in Blacksburg, Va. The Jackets will face top-ranked Virginia Sunday at 12 p.m. in Charlottesville, Va.

“The doubles point was the overall difference,” head coach Kenny Thorne said. “We received a good quick win from our No. 1 doubles and were up an early break at No. 2, but we just couldn’t hold on.”

The 4-3 loss puts the Jackets at 6-7 on the season, 1-3 in ACC play.

Virginia Tech took the doubles point to open the match, but not before it came down to the final pairing. VT’s Graber and Corace took down GT’s Miguel Muguruza and Austin Roebuck 8-3 at the No. 3 position to start things off, but the Jackets bounced back with an 8-2 win from Guillermo Gomez and Ryan Smith over Jacques and Re at No. 1. The Hokies would take the eventual winner in the final group as Kevin King and Doug Kenny fell 8-4 to VT’s Daciek and Delgado De Robles.

The Jackets would go down 3-1 early in singles, as freshman Dusan Miljevic fell 6-2, 6-2 to Brandon Corace, and Smith fell 6-4, 6-2 to Sebastien Jacques. Sophomore Eliot Potvin put Georgia Tech on the board in between the two losses with a 7-5, 6-2 triumph over Pedro Graber.

King kept the Jackets alive with a 6-3, 6-4 win at No.4 over Luke Somen, but the Hokies would clinch the match as Muguruza was unable to overcome the Hokies’ Delgado De Robles’ 6-1, 6-4 win at the No. 2 spot. Gomez gave the Jackets their third point with a 6-4, 7-6 win over No. 59 Yoann Re soon after, but it was too little too late.
