Jackets Edge Eastern Kentucky 2-0

PANTHERSVILLE, Ga. – Georgia Tech’s Erin Voeltz (3-1) tossed a complete-game shutout this afternoon to down Eastern Kentucky 2-0 in game three of the Georgia State Tournament at Bob Heck Field. Voeltz scattered five hits in the game and struck out four. Senior Tara Knudsen hit the game-winning double in the third inning and junior Liz Bartle added an insurance run for Tech in the seventh inning with a two-out double to extend the Jackets’ winning streak to five games. Tech improves to 7-1, while EKU falls to 3-3.

In the first two innings, Tech put runners in scoring position in each of the innings but could not push a run across. The Colonels had consecutive singles in the bottom of the second inning to put runners at first and second with one out. Voeltz put an end to the EKU threat with a strikeout and a pop out to second base as the game advanced to the third inning scoreless.

With one out in the top of the third inning, sophomore right fielder Amy Hosier doubled to left field and senior shortstop Tara Knudsen doubled down the right field line as Tech took an early 1-0 lead.

EKU’s Kelli Bromley led off the bottom of the sixth inning with a base hit to right field. Bromley advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt and moved over to third base on a ground out to first base. Knudsen then made a diving catch with two outs in shallow left field to hold the Colonels scoreless and send the game into the final inning with the Jackets holding onto a 1-0 lead.

In the top of the seventh inning, Bartle put the Rambling Wreck up by two runs with a two-out double to center field to score Knudsen who singled up the middle as Tech headed to the bottom half of the inning holding a two-run advantage.

Voeltz retired the next three batters in order as the Yellow Jackets improved to 2-0 in the tournament and solidified a spot in the championship game tomorrow at 4:45 p.m.

Georgia Tech scored two runs, on nine hits and no errors, while Eastern Kentucky had no runs, on five hits and no errors.

Tech will face Tennessee State in game six of the softball tournament on Saturday, Feb. 22, at 12:15 p.m. All the games can be followed on www.ramblinwreck.com.
