ATLANTA – A two-out, two-run double down the leftfield line by Karly Fullemin the bottom of the sixth inning gave the Georgia Tech softball team the lead and helped the Yellow Jackets to the doubleheader sweep of Georgia Southern Tuesday.
Tech (29-16) took down Georgia Southern (25-14) by a 1-0 score, coming back to win game two 5-1. The Yellow Jackets are currently on a 10-game win streak.
Hope Rush drove in the game winning run in the first game of the day and also picked up the victory from the circle, her 19th of the year. The shutout was Rush’s second in as many games and her eighth on the season. Kylie Kleinschmidtearned the game two victory pitching all seven innings while allowing just four hits and a run and striking out a career-best tying nine strikeouts.
Tech notched its only run of the first game in the bottom of the first inning on a single up the middle by Rush. Ashley Thomasled the game off getting hit by a pitch, stole second and came around to score on the RBI single. The run was all that Tech needed to earn the game one victory.
In game two, Georgia Southern got out to the early lead putting its first run of the game on the board in the third inning. Tech responded in the bottom half of the fourth as Kelsi Weseman, who began the inning with a single up the middle, moved up to second on a single to right by Alysha Rudnik, to third after an error by the GSU third baseman, and came home on a fielder’s choice to even things up at one-all.
Tech busted the game open in the sixth inning. With two outs on the board, Rudnik reached after the GSU short stop bobbled what would have been the final out of the inning. She then moved to third on a bloop single to right by Rush and Bear loaded the bases after getting hit by a pitch. On a 1-1 count, Fullem ripped a two-out, two run shot down the leftfield line to give Tech a 3-1 lead. With two strikes on her, Katie Johnskyblasted a shot to dead center to score two more, and give the Jackets a 5-1 lead heading into the final inning of play.
Kleinschmidt quickly tallied two outs and got the final out of the inning on a strikeout looking, her ninth of the game, tying her career best. Five of Kleinschmidt’s strikeouts froze her opponents at the plate.
Tech will be back in action Wednesday night with a 5 p.m. game against cross town rival Georgia State.
