COLUMBUS, Ga. – Sophomore Whitney Humphreys (5-1) worked four strong innings and freshman Whitney Haller threw the final three, tallying a save, and went 1-for-4, with one RBI to lead Georgia Tech (7-4) over Hofstra (5-5), 3-1, on Friday night at the NFCA Leadoff Classic.
Senior Amy Hosier went 3-for-4, with two doubles, to lead the Yellow Jackets offensively.
The Yellow Jackets jumped out to a 3-0 lead on the Pride in the top of the first inning, courtesy of two errors and a RBI single off the bat of freshman first baseman Whitney Haller.
HU’s Lisa Wambold broke up Humphrey’s no-hit bid in the bottom of the fourth inning on a bunt single to first base. The Jackets squashed the threat with a 6-4-3 double play as Tech continued to lead 3-0 after four innings of play.
The Pride put runners at second and third with no outs in the bottom of the fifth inning and forced Humphreys out of the circle for Tech. Haller entered for the Jackets and threw a wild pitch to allow the first run of the inning for Hofstra. The Pride try to score on another wild pitch but the ball clanked off the backstop and Tech was able to throw her out at the plate. Haller recorded the next two outs to end the threat as Tech led 3-1.
Haller threw scoreless sixth and seventh innings to record her first save of her collegiate career.
Tech scored three runs, on seven hits and had one error, while Hofstra scored one run, on four hits and committed two errors.
The Jackets will face No. 5 Michigan at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday to round out pool play at the tournament. All Tech games can be followed via live stats at www.ramblinwreck.com.
