Jackets Continue Spring Drills with Scrimmage Saturday

March 28, 2003

At the halfway point of spring practice, the Georgia Tech football team will scrimmage Saturday morning at Bobby Dodd Stadium/Grant Field, with practice beginning at 11 a.m.

Spring practices are open to the public. Fans and high school coaches attending Tech’s scrimmage Saturday should enter Bobby Dodd Stadium through Gate 8 on Techwood Drive, and all fans must sit in lower the East Stands. Due to on-going construction, the West Stands, West Gates and the service drive on Bobby Dodd Way are NOT available.

“You are looking for individual improvement, you’re looking to see if guys can improve within the scheme, and you’re looking for production on both sides of the ball,” said Tech head coach Chan Gailey when asked about what he hopes to accomplish in Saturday’s scrimmage.

Gailey noted that the Yellow Jackets will work on some aspects of the kicking game.

“We’re going to include some kicking game tomorrow and see how guys can handle pressure in that area,” said Gailey.

The kicking game is a point of emphasis as Tech must replace record-setting placekicker Luke Manget and dependable punters Dan Dyke and Chris Morehouse. Senior Dan Burnett and redshirt freshman David Jordan are handling most of the placekicking duties, while senior Hal Higgins and lefty Andy Thomson working on the punting.

“I’m really kind of pleased with some of the things going on with the punting game,” said Gailey. “Andy Thomson has really shown a lot of improvement. I’m very pleased with him thus far.”

Tech continues to work four quarterbacks in sophomore Damarius Bilbo, seniors A.J. Suggs and Brian Camp and freshman Al Pena.

“They’ll all get snaps, but as I’ve said before, we’re trying to give D-Bo (Bilbo) a few more snaps because we don’t as much about him as the other guys and Al is still learning,” said Gailey. “We’ll try to give him some snaps so that he can find his way around and try to get more comfortable with the offense.”
