Jackets Continue Preseason Drills

Aug. 4, 2006

ATLANTA–Georgia Tech was greeted by slightly cooler temperatures for the Yellow Jackets’ second day of preseason practice Friday morning at Rose Bowl Field.

Per NCAA rules, the Jackets worked in shorts and helmets, as they did on Thursday, as part of the required five-day acclimatization period. Tech will work in shorts and shoulder pads for Saturday’s practice, scheduled for 9:45 a.m.,

A key addition for the Yellow Jackets as they work toward their Sept. 2 season opener against third-ranked Notre Dame could be junior tight end Wayne Riles. He’s not a newcomer, but he has yet to play at Tech after transferring from Louisville two years ago, sitting out the 2004 season and then missing 2005 with a back injury.

“He feels good and healthy,” said Gailey. “I don’t know if he can play a whole ballgame yet, but he if could give us 15-20 plays, that would help our football team. He’s a good football player.”

Riles joins senior co-starters George Cooper and Michael Matthews and promising sophomore Colin Peek at the tight end position.

Among Tech’s freshman class, Quincy Kelly of Stone Mountain, Ga., and Decatur High will play linebacker after being recruited as a running back, and Dominique Reese, a quarterback at Auburn (Ala.) High School, will begin his career in the secondary. The Jackets have also added 12 freshmen walk-on players.
