Georgia Tech looks to continue its winning ways on Sunday and closeout this two-game homestand victorious when it hosts Georgia State for a 2 p.m. tilt. The Yellow Jackets are coming off a 73-60 win over Mercer on Tuesday night. Four Jackets finished in double-figure scoring totals led by Kayla Blackshear with 14 points, while Inés Noguero recorded her first collegiate double-double behind 10 points and a career-high 12 rebounds. The win marked the second of an in-state foe this year as Tech topped Kennesaw State on Nov. 19.
Georgia State brings a 4-2 record into Sunday’s matinee and is coming off a 12-day break, having last played on Nov. 28, collecting a 90-57 win at Western Carolina. The Panthers set season-highs for field goal percentage (54.1) and three-pointers made (12) in the win over the Catamounts. Preseason All-Sun Belt guard, Mikyla Tolivert, leads GSU in scoring, averaging 13.0 points per game on the season. Meanwhile, Deasia Merrill leads the Panthers on the glass, securing 6.8 rebounds per game, and blocks (1.4 bpg) to rank third in the Sun Belt in that statistical category. Georgia State opened the season with a five-game homestand and opened a four-game road swing at Western Carolina.
Georgia Tech and Georgia State are meeting for the 42nd time in program history on the hardwood on Sunday. The Yellow Jackets lead the all-time series, 30-11, after collecting a 60-42 win in McCamish Pavilion last season to push its win streak to 19-straight games against the Panthers. GSU was last victorious in the series on Dec. 19, 1998 with a 66-56 decision.
Competitive Drive Initiative Turn 2
Looking to build on the success of last year’s Competitive Drive Initiative, Georgia Tech, the Georgia Tech Foundation and Georgia Tech athletics are partnering once again to launch Competitive Drive Initiative Turn 2. CDI Turn 2 has a goal of raising $2.5 million in new gifts to the Alexander-Tharpe Fund’s Athletic Scholarship Fund by Dec. 31, and Georgia Tech and the Georgia Tech Foundation will match eligible gifts to accelerate the impact for Tech athletics. Like last year, not only will gifts to CDI Turn 2 be matched, but so will the contributor’s benefits in the way of A-T Fund giving levels and priority points.
