THE FLATS — Georgia Tech women’s tennis will be represented next week at the inaugural 2017 ITA Oracle National Fall Championships by senior Paige Hourigan and sophomore Kenya Jones.
The championships serve as the concluding event to the fall portion of the college tennis schedule. The tournament will be held Nov. 1-5 at the JW Marriott Desert Springs Resort & Spa in Palm Desert, Calif., and the Indian Wells Tennis Garden in Indians Wells, Calif.
Hourigan received an at-large selection in both singles and doubles play. After reaching the semifinals of the ITA Southeast Regionals over the weekend, Hourigan earned one of 22 at-large selections into the singles draw. Hourigan entered fall action with an ITA preseason ranking of No. 49 after posting a 20-8 dual singles mark last season. Players were considered for at-large selections if they reached the quarterfinals of regionals play.
Tech’s doubles tandem of Hourigan/Jones finished runners-up at the ITA Southeast Regionals on Monday after playing in the championship match. The pair, ranked No. 3 in the preseason ITA rankings, finished last season with a 25-3 doubles mark. Only 10 at-large selections were made in doubles play and a tandem had to reach the semifinals of regionals to be considered.
The ACC will be well represented in the championships with 14 singles competitors and eight doubles teams.
Round of 64 action will take place on Wednesday.
