PALM DESERT, Calif. – Representing the Georgia Tech women’s tennis team at the Oracle ITA National Fall Championships, Paige Hourigan and Kenya Jones secured a spot in the quarterfinals of the competitive tournament with a victory on Thursday afternoon.
Facing the tough Oregon doubles tandem of Shweta Sangwan/Alyssa Tobita in the round of 16, Tech’s No. 3 preseason ranked duo of Hourigan/Jones clinched a quarterfinal spot with a hard-fought victory. It was a back-and-forth battle in the first set with the decision coming down to the final point. Tied at 5-5, the Jackets won a break point to take the first set 7-5. In the second set, Tech expanded a 3-2 lead into a 5-2 advantage. The tandem broke serve to secure the match with a 6-2 second set win.
With the win, the Tech pair will face Georgia’s Katarina Jokic/Marianna Gould in the quarterfinals on Friday.
To open the day, Hourigan took on the No. 2 preseason ranked Gabriela Talaba of Texas Tech in the second round of singles play. Talaba, a NCAA All-American and Big 12 Player of the Year last year, took the match in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3.
