THE FLATS – Georgia Tech punter Pressley Harvin III was named to ESPN’s 26-member true freshman all-America team on Monday, becoming the third Yellow Jacket in the last four seasons to earn the recognition.
Harvin III leads all NCAA Division I FBS true freshmen, ranks 18th overall nationally and is second in the Atlantic Coast Conference in punting average at 44.1 yards per punt. Sixteen of his 50 punts (32 percent) were downed inside the 20 yard line, 13 (26 percent) traveled 50-plus yards and just 21 (42 percent) were returned.
Harvin’s 44.1-yard average was a Georgia Tech freshman record, breaking the old freshman mark of 43.8 yards per punt, set by Dan Dyke in 1999. It was also the fifth-best single-season average in program history.
A third-team all-ACC selection, Harvin became the first Georgia Tech freshman to earn first-, second- or third-team all-conference honors since Calvin Johnson (first team) and Travis Bell (second team) in 2006.
