Gunn Leads Georgia Tech Women's Tennis Past Furman, 6-1

GREENVILLE, S.C. – Led by a pair of victories from sophomore Catherine Gunn, the Georgia Tech women’s tennis team lost just one match en route to a 6-1 win over Furman at the Mickel Tennis Center in Greenville, S.C.

The Yellow Jackets (5-2) took early control of the match against the Paladins (4-7) winning all three doubles matches to begin the day. Gunn teamed with Sekita Grant to give Tech a win over Carolina Bentley and Marti Morris by an 8-3 score. The Jackets’ tandem of Jaime Wong and Kelly Anderson were 8-0 winners over Mary Kovarik and Natalie The at No. 1 doubles and Tech’s Mysti Morris and Lyndsay Shosho defeated Mary Neill Hagood and Krista Thomson at No. 3 by an 8-5 count.

In singles play, Gunn once again got the Jackets started, as she was a straight-set winner over Mary Kovarik at No. 1 singles, claiming the match by scores of 6-3 and 6-2. Wong followed Gunn at No. 2 and was also a straight-set victor, downing Haggod by scores of 6-3 and 7-5.

Tech senior Mysti Morris, seeing her first dual-match action of the year, was a winner at No. 4 singles, as she downed Bently in straight sets. Morris won the first set by a 6-4 score and then cruised to a 6-2 win in the second. The Yellow Jackets final two singles winners of the day included Sekita Grant, who downed Shellie Cochran in three sets at No. 5 singles. After dropping the first set by a 6-4 score, Grant rallied to win the next two by scores of 6-1 and 6-3. The final Tech winner of the day was freshman Kacie Anson, who made her debut win an impressive 6-0, 6-1 win over Lauren Welch at No. 6 singles.

Georgia Tech will be back in action on Sunday, when it opens ACC play by hosting NC State in a match that will get under way at 1 p.m. at the Bill Moore Tennis Center.
