THE FLATS – The Georgia Tech women’s basketball team will host the Michigan Wolverines in the 2016 ACC/Big Ten Challenge, announced Wednesday by the league offices.
The first series meeting between the schools will take place Thursday, Dec. 1, at McCamish Pavilion.
The Yellow Jackets are 6-3 all-time in the challenge, including a 4-0 record at home. The Jackets have recorded wins against Illinois, Nebraska, Northwestern, Penn State, Michigan State and Iowa. Tech has lost three of its last four games in the Challenge, including road losses at Michigan State (2014) and Indiana (2015).
The ACC leads the Challenge 6-0-3 (the last two Challenges have ended in ties), while the ACC holds a 62-46 edge over the Big Ten in Challenge games played to date.
Both Georgia Tech and Michigan played in the 2016 Women’s National Invitation Tournament. Michigan (21-14) advanced to the WNIT semifinals before losing to WNIT runner-up Florida Gulf Coast.
Georgia Tech (20-13) suffered a heart-breaking loss at home to Tulane in the second round of the 2016 WNIT. It was the eighth 20-win season and the ninth postseason trip in the last 10 seasons in the 13-year tenure of head coach MaChelle Joseph.
