@GTVolleyball Edges Lipscomb, 3-2

Sept. 12, 2014

NASHVILLE – Sophomore Teegan Van Gunst tallied 25 kills to lead the Georgia Tech volleyball team (4-3) past the Lipscomb Lady Bison (5-3), in five sets, 3-2 (25-20, 14-25, 25-22, 24-26, 15-6), Friday night at the Lipscomb Invite at Allen Arena.

Teegan Van Gunst recorded her first double-double of the season and led all players on the court with a career-high 25 kills, hitting at a .435 clip, and 13 digs. Annika Van Gunst added 12 kills and Courtney Felinski contributed 11. Freshman Sydney Wilson recorded seven kills, and put up two solo blocks and five block assists for the Jackets.

“I’m very proud of our team effort tonight,” head coach Michelle Collier said. “We came back from the break with a different attitude on the court and played very confident. We should have finished the match in game four, and we knew this Lipscomb team would not give up and back down. It was great to see how intense and focused we came out in game five to finish.

“Teegan carried a heavy load of our offense tonight, she was going after it. We will need to maintain our focus and energy for a tough day ahead of us tomorrow.”

In set one, Tech worked its way back from a three-point deficit, 16-13, to take the lead, 20-19, and win the set, 25-20. The Jackets out-hit the Lady Bison .286 to .069 in the opening frame, but it was the Lady Bison who jumped out to a 5-1 lead in set two and never looked back, winning 25-14, to even the match 1-1.

The Jackets took set three, 25-22, and were poised to put the match away with a 24-21 lead in game four, but the Lady Bison fought back behind the serving of Brittnay Estes to win, 26-24.

The fifth set was controlled by the Jackets, as Tech turned a 5-4 lead into a seven-point margin, 12-4, thanks to London Ackermann’s aggressive serving, to win the set 15-6. Ackermann tallied three aces and 19 digs on the night.

The Yellow Jackets are back in action at the Lipscomb Invitational on Saturday with matches against Utah at 11 a.m. ET and vs. ETSU at 5 p.m. ET.
