THE FLATS – The Georgia Tech volleyball team took to the court to showcase its 2014 edition at the Gold/White Scrimmage in front a great crowd at O’Keefe Gymnasium on Saturday. The team signed autographs following the scrimmage.
“I definitely want to thank the fans.” Head coach Michelle Collier said. “The atmosphere was great. The band being here recreated the environment for our incoming players, and refreshing everybody on what it feels like to play here and why they’re proud to play here.
“It’s a great environment, super energetic and makes your heart beat a little faster. It was great to get that first-hand feel of what it will be like when we come back in three weeks.”
The team played a full five sets with the gold team winning the opening set, 25-23, and the white team winning the next four sets, (25-23, 25-20, 25-22, 15-13).
“I saw a lot of good things,” Collier said. “We put players in different positions and they responded well. We were able to play with some different lineups. It gave us a lot of options, which was good. Being even is great because that’s what you want out of your team. You don’t just want six players who are dominating, you want the team to be all-around and have players fighting for positions.
“Defensively we can always work on some things. I thought our middles did a great job blocking. We definitely need to work on their transition and get a little more offense out of them. I think the same with our outsides. We need to turn a couple more out-of-system sets into points. We didn’t turn them into errors, which was good, but now we need to turn it up a notch.”
The Yellow Jackets open the regular season Friday, Aug. 29 against Jacksonville at the Gamecock Invitational in Columbia, S.C. First serve is set for 4:30 p.m.
