@GTMBB Posts Gueye, Ogbonda to Redshirt

Nov. 13, 2015

THE FLATS – Georgia Tech post players Abdoulaye Gueye and Sylvester Ogbonda sit out the 2015-16 season as redshirts, head coach Brian Gregory announced Friday.

Gueye, a 6-9 forward from Dakar, Senegal, and Ogbonda, a 6-10 freshman from Port Harcourt, Nigeria, are the least experienced players in a deep and otherwise veteran group of post players for the Yellow Jackets.

“I believe that A.D. (Gueye) and Sylvester have an opportunity to be tremendous players in our program,” said Gregory. “When you have a situation where you can red-shirt two players and help them get physically stronger, increase their skill level and compete every day in practice against three senior post players, it’s a good situation for them and their future, and it’s a good situation for our program. We now have the depth in the program that we can redshirt players that are going to make a huge impact down the road. We wanted to look at the big picture for both of these guys, and it is bright for them and for our program.”

Gregory will rely on seniors Charles Mitchell (6-8, Atlanta, Ga.) and Nick Jacobs (6-8, Atlanta, Ga.) in the Tech starting lineup to begin the season, and 6-10 sophomore Ben Lammers (San Antonio, Texas) and 6-8 graduate transfer James White (Jonesboro, Ga.) off the bench. Those four players have combined to play 300 college games in their careers.

Gueye played in eight games for a total of 34 minutes last season after a standout prep career at Central Park Christian School in Birmingham, Ala. Ogbonda was an All-Metro big man at National Christian Academy in Washington, D.C.
