@GT_WTEN’s Kurey Advances at Southeast Regionals

ATHENS, Ga. – The Georgia Tech women’s tennis team notched three singles wins and one doubles win on the third day of the USTA/ITA Southeast Regionals at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Athens, Ga.

Senior Megan Kurey advanced to the consolation singles quarterfinals after posting two exciting wins this afternoon. Kurey fought it out with Florida’s Peggy Porter for a hard-earned win in the round of 32. Kurey took set one in a tiebreaker, 7-6 (5), and then Porter did the same, winning set two, 7-6 (4). Kurey came out on top in the final tiebreaker, 1-0 (9), and advanced on to face Georgia State’s Linn Timmerman.   

It was another battle for Kurey in the consolation round of 16. After falling behind 6-1 in the first set, Kurey bounced back against Timmerman to win set two, 6-4. Kurey then took the tiebreaker 1-0 (2) and will now play in the quarterfinals of the consolation singles bracket tomorrow.

The third day of the USTA/ITA Southeast Regionals began with the round of 16 in the main draw doubles which saw the No. 7 pairing of Paige Hourigan and Kendal Woodard advance. The duo cruised past North Florida’s Noemi Hemmerich and Quetzali Vazquez, 8-1, to move on to the quarterfinals. Hourigan and Woodard were eliminated in the quarterfinals by No. 55 Spencer Liang and Peggy Porter with an 8-5 loss.

Senior Natasha Prokhnevska also played in the consolation singles bracket this afternoon. Prokhnevska captured a victory in the consolation singles round of 32, blanking FAU’s Bianica Biglione 6-0 in set one and edging her, 6-4, in set two. In the round of 16, Prokhnevska faced FGCU’s Elizabeth Means.  Means defeated Prokhnevska, 6-3, 6-3, in the next round.

In the main singles draw, sophomore Johnnise Renaud, the No. 72-ranked singles player, was matched up against No. 32 Belinda Woolcock of Florida.  Renaud fell 6-2, 6-3 and was eliminated from the main draw.

Tomorrow’s action starts at 10 a.m. with the singles consolation quarterfinals followed by the main draw singles quarterfinals and then the singles consolation semifinals.
