Jan. 14, 2016

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Georgia Tech track & field team will open 2016 in the Music City as they compete in the Vanderbilt Commodore Invitational. The meet will take place at the Vanderbilt Student Rec Center and consist of 17 schools including Alabama, Auburn, Michigan and Tennessee.

Action begins Friday at 4 p.m. with field events, followed by the 200-meter, 4×800 relays and 5000-meter. Saturday’s events begin at 10 a.m. and will end with the 4×400 relay at 5:05 p.m. Saturday’s field events will begin at 11 a.m. with the final event scheduled for 2 p.m.

“We’re very excited about getting started with the 2016 indoor season,” head men’s coach Grover Hinsdale said. “Vanderbilt has a great facility and the teams attending, along with the great track, will make this a very competitive meet and a great opportunity for our team members.”

Three athletes to watch on the men’s side are Spencer Allen, Jeremy Greenwald and Myles McDavid. Allen, a senior from Ina, Ill., earned second-team All-ACC honors last season in the 60-meter hurdles. Greenwald, a senior from Chesapeake, Va., was part of relay teams that won the 4×800 at the Penn Relays and Florida Relays in 2015. He was also an honorable mention All-American in the 1500-meter in 2014. McDavid, a senior for Evans, Ga., is one of the top returning jumpers in the Atlantic Coast Conference.

On the women’s side, junior Kenya Collins will be one to keep an eye on in the 60-meter hurdles. Young jumpers Bria Matthews, a freshman, and Bailey Weiland, a sophomore, look to make an impact, as well.

“The women are excited about the opportunity to line-up and compete this weekend at Vanderbilt,” head women’s coach Alan Drosky said. “There will be outstanding competition and the facility is fantastic. Preparation for the season has gone well so we should see some very good early season performances.”
