BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Georgia Tech track & field squad will be in action Friday and Saturday as the Yellow Jackets will compete in the Doc Hale VT Elite Meet hosted by Virginia Tech.
The field will consist of several ranked (M/W ranking) teams, including East Carolina (57/91), Florida (1/4), Georgia (10/2), Kentucky (88/12), North Carolina (60/42), NC State (25/8), Pittsburgh (77/NR), Tennessee (9/14), Virginia (18/115), Virginia Tech (4/38) and Wake Forest (129/120). Georgia Tech is ranked 74th on the men’s side and 36th on the women’s. There will be no team scores for the event.
Friday will begin with the long jump at 5 p.m. ET, an event in which freshman Bria Matthews set the indoor school record last weekend at Vanderbilt. Two weeks ago, Matthews set a Birmingham CrossPlex record in the triple jump, which earned her ACC Women’s Field Co-Performer of the Week honors.
Another Yellow Jacket to keep an eye on is Kenya Collins, who finished fourth last weekend in Nashville in the 60m hurdles. Collins, a junior from Jonesboro, Ga., recorded a personal-best time of 8.32 in the event, which puts her at 23rd nationally.
“The VT Elite has been a fixture on our schedule for years, and we’re excited to compete in it once again,” head women’s coach Alan Drosky said. “Our women are making great progress each week, and we want to come out of this weekend with outstanding performances across the board. Every performance is important, and the women have some great opportunities this weekend.”
Senior Jeremy Greenwald, who set the school record in the indoor 3000m earlier this season, will not compete. However, Spencer Allen will hope to have another strong performance in the 60m hurdles after finishing third last weekend in Nashville and reaching the finals a week earlier in Birmingham. Allen currently sits at 26th nationally in the event after posting a personal-best time of 7.89 at Vanderbilt.
“We are looking forward to this competition at VT,” head men’s coach Grover Hinsdale said. “We have had a lot of success and great performances at their facility over the years. This meet will provide a great opportunity for our team members.”
