THE FLATS – The Georgia Tech track & field squad finished its second and final day of competition at the Georgia Tech Invite on Saturday, and it was highlighted by a victory in the women’s triple jump.
Matthews, a freshman from Morrow, Ga., finished first in the triple jump with a leap of 13.00m, her best of the outdoor season. She also won the long jump competition on Friday.
“We had a good weekend, competed hard and saw some improvements in a lot of areas,” head women’s coach Alan Drosky said. “Bria jumped well and Kenya (Collins) was close to a personal best in the hurdles. The 400m and 400 hurdles were solid and Bailey looked better in the high jump. All in all, we moved in a good direction and need to build on these efforts.”
On the men’s side, Andres Littig led the way with a second-place finish in the 800m with a time of 1:49.73. “This was not our best meet of the year, but we did have some bright spots,” head men’s coach Grover Hinsdale said. “We had two out with injuries and one with the flu. However, I thought AZ Reese, Andres Littig and Julian Darden had very solid performances. We need to get everyone back and ready to roll as the ACC Championships are looming.”
A.Z. Reese finished ninth in the 400m with a time of 47.45, while Julian Darden finished 20th in the 400m hurdles with a time of 55.02.
The Jackets will compete next weekend at the Penn Relays (April 28-30) as well as the Georgia Invite (April 29-30).
