Griffith Named Director of High School Relations

May 7, 2003

Bob Griffith, a long-time high school football coach in the state of Georgia with more than 200 victories, has joined the Georgia Tech Athletic Association staff as Director of High School Relations.

Griffith replaces Butch Brooks, who moved to the position of Director of Football Operations.

Griffith comes to Tech after four years (1999-2002) as head football coach and director of athletics at Appling County High School in Baxley, Ga. That was his second stint at Appling County, where he also served as head football coach and head track coach from 1973-77.

He also spent 18 years (1981-98) as head coach and director of athletics at Effingham County High School in Springfield, Ga., following three years (1978-80) in the same position at Colquitt County High in Moultrie, Ga.

In his most recent stay at Appling County, Griffith led the school to the state playoffs all four years, including a berth in the state semifinals in 1999, and he was named Athletic Director of the Year in Region 2-AAA in 1999 and in Region 1-AAA in 2002. His tour at Effingham County was highlighted by an appearance in the state championship game in 1987.

He entered the Georgia high school ranks in 1970 as an assistant coach at Northside High School in Warner Robins.

Griffith, who served two years in the U.S. Army, is a 1968 graduate of Virginia Tech, where served as co-captain of the football team in 1967.

A native of Louisville, Ky., he is married to the former Stella Massee of Hawkinsville, Ga.
