Athens, Ga. – For the second straight year, Georgia Tech’s Guillermo Gomez has advanced to the Division I singles finals at the Southern Intercollegiate Championships, and teammates Kevin King and Juan Spir have reached the semifinals in doubles at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex.
Gomez, a senior from Alicante, Spain, seeded No. 1 in this event, defeated Georgia’s Sadio Doumbia, 6-2, 6-0, Sunday morning, then came back in the afternoon and eliminated Vanderbilt’s Ryan Lipman, 6-3, 6-3, to earn a berth in the Monday championship match at 11 a.m. against Georgia’s Javier Garrapiz.
Gomez, who has not lost a set in this tournament, earned career victories No. 89 and 90 at Georgia Tech in his quest to overtake his head coach, Kenny Thorne, who holds the Institute career mark of 112.
“Guillermo has been playing very strong and closing out his opponents very well,” said Thorne.
Meanwhile, junior Kevin King and sophomore Juan Spir, the top-seeded doubles team this weekend and ranked 43rd nationally, won their quarterfinal match, 8-3, over Kinshuk Sharma and Michael Pereira of UNC Wilmington Sunday morning. They face Georgia’s Drake Bernstein and Wil Spencer in the semifinals Monday at 11 a.m.
Spir, the only other remaining Tech player in the Division I singles competition, lost in the quarterfinals Sunday, 6-0, 6-4, to Lipman. Ryan Smith and Dusan Miljevic, competing in Division II, were eliminated in the quarterfinals Sunday morning.
