ATLANTA – After capturing the 2004 Georgia Tech/Atlanta Marriott NW Holiday Invitational Title Friday with a win over Alcorn State, the Yellow Jackets (8-2) host UAB (3-9) in their final test prior to the start of ACC play when the Blazers travel to Alexander Memorial Coliseum Monday at 7 p.m. The game will be broadcast on WREK-Radio, 91.1 FM in Atlanta, and online at www.wrek.org.
The Yellow Jackets have won their last three games, including two in Georgia Tech’s annual holiday tournament over New Year’s, after dropping a pair of road games at Tulsa and St. John’s. The Blazers also captured their home tournament title this past week, defeating Tennessee State and Furman, after going 1-9 to start the season.
Led by tournament MVP Jessica Williams, the Yellow Jackets placed three on this past weekend’s all-tournament team, as Williams, Kasha Terry and Stephanie Higgs all earned the honors. Williams was named MVP after recording the second double-double of her career in the championship game and earned the all-tournament nod for the second time in her career. Terry’s 14-point, seven rebound, five block performance in the first round earned the junior her first career honor, while Higgs’ game-high 19 points against Alcorn State gave the sophomore the first all-tournament honor of her career.
Higgs has led the Yellow Jackets in scoring this season with 14.1 points per game and leads the team in steals (22) while standing second in assists (21). The Lawrenceville, Ga. native earned her first ACC Player of the Week honor last week following a 30-point performance against Samford. She was joined by freshman Chioma Nnamaka, who earned the Rookie of the Week honor, and the newcomer stands second on the team in scoring this season (12.2 ppg) while leading the team in free throw percentage and three-point field goals.
Following the game against the Blazers, the Yellow Jackets will turn their attention to the ACC, as they travel to Tallahassee, Fla. Thursday for a 7 p.m. matchup with Floriday State. The game will be broadcast on the Georgia Tech student station, WREK-Radio, 91.1 FM in Atlanta.
