GEORGIA TECH VOLLYEBALL ANNOUNCES 2005 SCHEDULE
The Georgia Tech volleyball team has announced the 2005 volleyball schedule on Fri., May 20, by head coach Bond Shymansky.
The Yellow Jackets will begin the season Sept. 2-3 at the University of Arizona in a tournament that will feature 2004 NCAA Participants Arizona (Sept. 2) and Winthrop (Sept. 3) and also a contest with Northwestern (Sept. 2).
Tech will then return home to host the Georgia Tech Invitational from Sept. 9-10. The Jackets will be joined in their home tournament by George Washington (Sept. 9), Long Island University (Sept. 10) and Western Kentucky (Sept. 11).
The Yellow Jackets then will play in its final preseason tournament prior to the conference schedule in Athens, Ga. The Jackets will be joined in the tournament by Michigan (Sept. 16) and the University of Georgia (Sept. 17).
This year’s Atlantic Coast Conference schedule features a 12-team double round robin that will include ACC newcomer Boston College. The Jackets begin ACC play this year at home against Wake Forest on Sept. 23 and Duke on Sept. 24 and hosts defending ACC Champion Maryland Oct. 7. The Jackets’ final home match of the season will be against North Carolina on Nov. 12.
“There are several highlights to this year’s schedule,” said head coach Bond Shymansky who will begin his fourth season at the helm of the Yellow Jackets. “We feel that it’s important to play against some of the best teams in the country each year, and really fell like we’ve accomplished that. Our trip to Arizona features three good teams, as does the tournament at the University of Georgia. Our conference keeps getting more competitive and with playing each team home and away, there should be several teams competing for the top spot. We will be challenged and ready for post-season play when December rolls around.”
The Yellow Jackets return 7 letterwinners from the 2004 team that advanced to the NCAA Sweet Sixteen for the second consecutive year. Tech finished the season 27-7 and as the regular season ACC champions with a perfect 16-0 record.
