THE FLATS –The Georgia Tech women’s basketball team will recognize the participants in its sixth annual “Jacket 2 Jacket” reading program at Sunday’s contest against Alcorn State that tips off at 2 p.m.
The reading program, which involves elementary and middle school students in the State of Georgia, is an effort by Tech women’s basketball to promote and encourage children to read and learn.
Students recorded the number of pages read from Oct. 1 – Nov. 2 and prizes will be awarded for the highest school total, the highest class total, the highest individual total and the highest individual from each grade.
In total, 19 elementary and middle schools participated with nearly 2,000 children reading a total of 1,872,442 pages in the one-month time period. The individual winners from grades K-8 totaled 153,253 pages read while the winning classes from grades K-8 read 423,881 pages.
Ariel Gallardo, a fifth-grader from Kanoheda, was the highest individual reader with 42,202 pages read while Sahana Parker, a sixth-grader from Inman, was runner-up with 21,350 pages read.
Hollydale Elementary tallied the highest total for an elementary school with 487,953 pages read while Inman Middle won the middle school contest with 569,966 pages read.
