Georgia Tech Softball Wins First Two Fall Games

Oct. 6, 2013

KENNESAW, Ga. – The Georgia Tech softball team opened its first weekend of fall ball with a pair of victories Saturday against North Georgia and Kennesaw State at Bailey Park. The Jacket defeated the Nighthawks, 6-4, before downing the Owls, 4-2.

Senior Ashley Thomas hit two home runs on the day and both were first-pitch swings with two outs on the board. Sophomore Maddie Lionberger was solid at the plate, going 2-for-3 in game one with back-to-back doubles and a two-bagger in the second game that scored the go ahead run.

The Jackets’ pitching staff had a strong outing. Freshman Kanani Cabrales picked up the win in game one, pitching 4.2 innings, and sophomore Ashley Clifton pitched 2.0 innings in relief. Junior Kylie Kleinschmidt entered the game with Tech in the lead 6-4 and the bases loaded with two outs, and fanned the final batter to give the Jackets the win.

Kleinschmidt put in a complete-game effort against the Owls, allowing two runs on four hits and striking out six.

The Jackets are back in action Sunday, Oct. 13 when they host Georgia Gwinnett College in a doubleheader. Action begins at 1 p.m. ET at Mewborn Field.
