ATLANTA – On the heels of its first-ever national ranking last season, the Georgia Tech softball team opens the 2003 season ranked 19th in the preseason USA Today/NFCA Division I Top 25 Poll, which was released Wednesday.

This ranking marks the first time that Tech has been nationally rated to start a season. The Jackets finished the 2002 campaign, which ended just one game short of the Women’s College World Series, ranked No. 18.

Tech will play no less than seven games against teams ranked in the preseason poll. The only other Atlantic Coast Conference team in the rankings in Florida State, which checks in at No. 9. The Jackets also have doubleheaders on the schedule with No. 17 Georgia and 22nd-ranked Alabama. Tech faces a stiff test on its opening day of action of the season, as the Jackets will play No. 20 South Carolina at the Gamecock Invitational on February 8.

The Jackets also have the chance to play several other ranked teams during their tournament schedule, including defending national champion and third-ranked California.

Tech went 5-6 in 11 games versus top-25 opponents a year ago.
