Georgia Tech Senior Montgomery Adds Defensive Accolade

March 2, 2011

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Georgia Tech senior Alex Montgomery was named to the Atlantic Coast Conference All-Defensive Team, announced Wednesday by ACC Commissioner John Swofford.

The team is selected by the ACC’s 12 women’s basketball head coaches. Florida State senior guard Christian Hunnicutt was named the ACC Defensive Player of the Year.

It is the second all-conference honor for Montgomery this season and the sixth of her career. The Tacoma, Wash., native was named to the All-ACC second team on Tuesday. She earned ACC All-Freshman Team selection in 2008, All-ACC third team accolades in 2009 and 2010, and was also selected as ACC Sixth Player of the Year in 2010.

Four Yellow Jackets have earned five all-defensive team selections since the award’s inception in 2000, and Montgomery is the first to be honored since Jacqua Williams in 2009.

“I am especially excited that Alex was named to the ACC All-Defensive Team,” head coach MaChelle Joseph said. “As the best defensive rebounder in the ACC and what she does on the defensive end of the floor, she is very deserving of this honor.”

In addition to being the Yellow Jackets’ leading scorer, Montgomery is also the team’s leading rebounder, pulling down 8.6 caroms per contest. Eleven times this season she has grabbed double digit rebounds. Montgomery is third in the ACC in rebounding and trails only Duke’s Krystal Thomas and Boston College’s Carolyn Swords, both of whom are true post players.

Additionally, Montgomery is the best defensive rebounder in the conference, pulling down 6.9 defensive rebounds per game. She also ranks eighth in the ACC in steals with 2.2 per game.

Joining Montgomery and Hunnicutt on the ACC All-Defensive Team are Miami junior guard Shenise Johnson, North Carolina sophomore forward/center Waltiea Rolle and Duke senior guard Jasmine Thomas.

The Yellow Jackets will begin play in the 2011 ACC Tournament on Thursday morning as the No. 5 seed and will take on the 12th-seeded Virginia Tech Hokies at 11 a.m. at the Greensboro Coliseum. The game will be televised by the ACC’s regional sports network and fans can listen to the game on WREK 91.1 or WREK.org.
