GREENSBORO, N.C. – Defending Atlantic Coast Conference champion Georgia Tech was picked to finish third in the ACC’s Coastal Division by the media attending the ACC Kickoff here on Monday.
Virginia Tech received 62 of the 98 first-place votes. The Hokies were followed by Miami (20 first-place votes), Georgia Tech (11), North Carolina (5), Duke and Virginia.
Florida State was chosen as the team to beat in the Atlantic Division, racking up 78 first-place votes. The Seminoles were followed by Clemson (16), Boston College (4), NC State, Wake Forest and Maryland.
The media selected Virginia Tech to defeat Florida State in the ACC Championship Game. The Hokies received 50 votes to win the title, followed by Florida State, Miami and Georgia Tech.
Virginia Tech was also picked to win the championship last season when Georgia Tech finished 7-1 in league play and defeated Clemson in the ACC title game.
Florida State quarterback Christian Ponder was the runaway selection for ACC Preseason Player of the Year. The Seminole quarterback received 45 votes, followed by Virginia Tech’s Ryan Williams (16), NC State’s Russell Wilson (6), North Carolina’s Robert Quinn (6) and Yellow Jacket senior quarterback Joshua Nesbitt (4).
