ATLANTA – The Georgia Tech men’s track and field team will host the annual Yellow Jacket Invitational, Friday-Saturday, March 30-31, at the George C. Griffin Track. The outdoor meet will begin at 6 p.m. on Friday with the men’s and women’s hammer throw. The meet will continue on Saturday at 10:30 a.m. with the shot put and javelin. Running events will commence at 1 p.m. on Saturday with the 3,000-meter steeplechase.
“The Yellow Jacket Invitational will be an exceptional meet,” said men’s head coach Grover Hinsdale. “We had a great start to the outdoor season last weekend at Wake Forest. It is always special to compete at your home facility and we look forward to this great opportunity to compete in the competitive environment that Griffin Track provides.”
Several Yellow Jackets achieved NCAA Regional qualifying marks at the Wake Forest Open last weekend.
Junior Jerome Miller set a new school-record in the men’s high jump with an NCAA Regional qualifying mark of 7 feet, 2 ¼ inches. Miller placed first at the Wake Forest meet with his top mark.
Sophomore Steve Marcelle set NCAA Regional qualifying marks in both the shot put and the discus. Marcelle tossed the shot put 58 feet, 7 ¼ inches to place second and then finished third in the Discus with a throw of 173 feet, 1 inch. Sophomore Andy Powlen also had an NCAA Regional qualifying mark in the shot put with a toss of 56 feet, 6 ¾ inches.
Senior James Lemons II qualified for the NCAA Regionals in the men’s triple jump with a mark of 50 feet, 7 ¼ inches and a second-place finish.
