Georgia Tech Hosts Virginia Tech Friday Night

Feb. 7, 2013

Georgia Tech Game Notes

Georgia Tech will be trying to extend its current winning streak to three games when the Yellow Jackets host the Virginia Tech Hokies on student appreciation night at McCamish Pavilion. The two Techs will tip off at 8:30 p.m., and can be seen on the ACC’s Regional Sports Networks. There will be free pizza and giveaways for Georgia Tech students.

The Jackets will also be trying for their seventh consecutive win over the Hokies in Virginia Tech’s first visit to Atlanta since Jan. 31, 2010.

Junior Tyaunna Marshall and sophomore Sydney Wallace can both crack Georgia Tech career top 10 lists against the Hokies on Friday night. Marshall enters the contest with 1,350 points and needs just 14 to tie Sasha Goodlett for 10th all-time at Georgia Tech. Wallace has knocked down 77 career 3-pointers and needs just two to tie Christie Finney for 10th all-time. Wallace has made 14 3-pointers in the last three games.

Marshall earned her second ACC Player of the Week award after posting two double-doubles in a pair of wins last week. She averaged 26.5 points, 13.5 rebounds, 5.0 assists and 3.5 steals per game in wins over Wake Forest and at Virginia.

TRIPLE THREAT
Junior Tyaunna Marshall is the only player in the ACC to rank in the league’s top 10 in scoring (2nd, 16.9 ppg), rebounding (5th, 8.7 rpg) and steals (6th, 2.4 spg).

1,000 CAREER POINTS
Junior Tyaunna Marshall scored her 1,000th career point on a putback against Kennesaw State, Nov. 13, at McCamish Pavilion. She became the 26th Yellow Jacket with 1,000 career points and just the 10th to do so before her senior year at Georgia Tech.

Marshall currently has 1,350 points and has scored in double digits in 74 of 92 career games.

GT TOP 10 SCORERS
Marshall will likely break into the Georgia Tech career scoring top 10 in the coming games.

The junior enters the Virginia Tech game with 1,350 career points and in 12th all-time at Tech. Sasha Goodlett ranks 10th with 1,364 points all-time. The full list of Georgia Tech career scoring leaders can be found on page 11.

Marshall began the season with 978 points and outside of the top 26 Yellow Jacket scorers.

GETTING OFFENSIVE
Through games of Feb. 4, Georgia Tech is first in the ACC in offensive rebounds per game, grabbing 18.4 an outing. The Yellow Jackets rank second among “Big Six” conference schools in offensive boards. Only the Cal Bears’ 18.6 per game are more. Tech is the only ACC school to rank in the top 10.

FROM LONG RANGE
Sophomore Sydney Wallace is already closing in on the Georgia Tech career top 10 for 3-pointers made. Entering the Virginia Tech game on, Wallace has made 77 career threes. Currently 10th on the GT all-time list is Christie Finney with 79, just two ahead of Wallace. As a freshman, Wallace made 45.

PLAY4KAY
Sunday’s game against North Carolina is Georgia Tech’s annual Play4Kay game.

The 2013 Play 4Kay initiative (formerly known as WBCA Pink Zone) is an opportunity for a nation of coaches to raise breast cancer awareness and funds for research on the court, across campuses, in communities and beyond.

Since its inception in 2007, the Play 4Kay initiative has raised over $2 million to support women’s cancer research. The Kay Yow Cancer Fund is the official charity of the initiative.
