GEORGIA TECH FOOTBALL
Post-Practice Report – August 5, 2007
Practice #3
Rose Bowl Field
4:30-6:30 p.m.
Format: Helmets, shoulder pads and shorts
Weather: Overcast, warm and humid (practice began in a light drizzle)
Georgia Tech went through its third day of practice Sunday afternoon with one session lasting just over two hours. The Yellow Jackets, who donned shoulder pads with helmets and shorts, are easing into the most challenging part of preseason drills. The team will begin wearing full pads on Wednesday.
Notebook:
— Two Yellow Jackets – tight ends Alex Paquette and Brad Sellers – are wearing different jersey numbers from last season. Paquette switched from 69 to 80 and Sellers from 91 to 81.
— Today was moving day for many of the Yellow Jacket players, who moved this morning into on-campus housing.
Fact of the Day:
In Chan Gailey’s five previous seasons as Georgia Tech’s head coach, his teams have defeated seven nationally-ranked teams. What’s impressive about that is that six of the seven have come on the road against teams ranked higher in the national polls than his Yellow Jackets. Five of those six wins against ranked teams on the road have come in the last three seasons. Notre Dame, which hosts Georgia Tech in the season opener Sept. 1, is not ranked in the USA Today Coaches Poll. The Irish, however, could be ranked when the Associated Press poll comes out later this month.
By The Numbers:
9 – Number of players on the roster weighing 300 pounds or more
13 – Number of players on the roster standing 6-5 or taller
59 – Number of players, including walk-ons, from the state of Georgia
Quoting Head Coach Chan Gailey
When asked about true freshman running back Jonathan Dwyer, who enjoyed an impressive day of practice running the ball:
“We’ve got some talented freshmen. He (Dwyer) does some nice things, but he makes mistakes too. This group of freshmen really has some talent.”
When asked about senior defensive end Darrell Robertson:
“Darrell has done a good job of building himself up to play that position. I think he’ll have a very good senior year.”
Quoting sophomore tight end Colin Peek about an injury that has prevented him from full-scale practice:
“It (the injury) is a day-to-day thing. I tweaked my Achilles and that is something, if you aggravate it, it just gets worse. I’ll just do what the trainer thinks I should do. I’m hoping to begin some light running soon and ease back into it.”
Next practice: Monday (9 a.m.) at Rose Bowl Field.
