Georgia Tech Falls to North Carolina 5-3, in Softball Home Finale

ATLANTA — North Carolina topped Georgia Tech, 5-3, in the Yellow Jackets’ final home softball game of the year Sunday afternoon at Glenn Field.

The Tar Heels scored first and held off a late Yellow Jacket rally as they improved to 30-17-1 on the year and 4-2 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Georgia Tech fell to 23-26 overall and 2-5 in the ACC. North Carolina got on the boards in the second inning after first baseman Beth Olen hit a one-out double to center field. Lauren Parker, pinch running for Olen, advanced to third on a fly out to right field by third baseman Kelly Ramsey and scored on a single down the left field line by second baseman Dionne Streete.

The Tar Heels added three more runs in the fifth with two two-out home runs. Shortstop Michelle Semmes, who led UNC with two hits, sent her fourth home run of the year over the center field wall. After catcher Natalie Anter drew a walk, left fielder Emily Price hit the Tar Heels’ second home run of the inning to increase North Carolina’s lead to 4-0.

But Georgia Tech battled back, posting a three-run inning in the sixth. Third baseman Jamie Frost led off the inning with a double to left field and scored on an Erin Hawley double to center. Shortstop Tara Knudsen drew a walk and with one out, right fielder Soraya Reddick blasted a two-run triple to center field. With Reddick on third and just one out, the Tar Heels made a pitching change. Radara McHugh came in to relieve starter Michael Parrot (12-7) and retired the next two batters. The Yellow Jackets were unable to plate the tying run, but pulled to within 4-3 going into the seventh inning. North Carolina added an insurance run in the top of the seventh. Right fielder Rosie Gustavson led off with a double down the right field line and advanced to third on a single by Semmes. Anter picked up her 26th RBI of the year on a sacrifice bunt, scoring Gustavson. Mimi Utt picked up the loss for the Yellow Jackets and fell to 2-3. McHugh finished the game for the Tar Heels and picked up her first save of the year.

The Yellow Jackets conclude the regular season on May 6 with a doubleheader at East Carolina.
