Georgia Tech Falls To Duke In First ACC Men's Tennis Match, 4-3

ATLANTA – Georgia Tech’s men’s tennis team, ranked 29th nationally, fell to No. 19 Duke Saturday, 4-3, at the Sheffield Tennis Center on the Duke campus, in the first Atlantic Coast Conference match of 2002 for both teams.

Duke picked up the doubles point with wins at the numbers one and three positions. Phillip King then pushed the Blue Devil lead to 2-0 with a straight set win over Roger Anderson at number one singles. Georgia Tech responded with back-to-back wins by Scott Schnugg and Joao Menano at the numbers five and three slots to tie the match at 2-2.

After Yorke Allen’s 7-5, 6-1 victory over West Nott at number six gave Duke a 3-2 advantage, Joel Spicher clinched the match with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Stephen Moros at number four. Georgia Tech’s David Wright then rounded out the scoring with a three-set win over Michael Yani at number two.

The Yellow Jackets return to action Sunday at 1 p.m. at No. 35 Wake Forest in Winston-Salem, N.C.
