Four Tech Teams Earn NCAA Public Recognition Awards

May 3, 2017

THE FLATS – Georgia Tech women’s cross country, golf, men’s swimming & diving and volleyball all received NCAA Public Recognition Awards on Wednesday for having Academic Progress Rate (APR) scores that rank among the top 10 percent nationally in their respective sports for the four-year period ending in 2015-16.

Most notably, Georgia Tech golf earned its 12th-straight Public Recognition Award, continuing its streak of earning the honor every year since the inception of the APR program in 2006. Among Power 5 conferences, head coach Bruce Heppler’s program is one of two men’s golf teams and 14 programs overall that have earned all 12 Public Recognition Awards.

Men’s swimming & diving, under head coach Courtney Shealy Hart, earned a Public Recognition Award for the fourth straight year while head coach Michelle Collier’s volleyball team claimed the honor for the second year in a row and fourth time overall. Head coach Alan Drosky’s women’s cross country squad received the award for the fourth time overall and first time since earning it three straight years from 2008-09 through 2010-11.

Georgia Tech’s four Public Recognition Awards are tied for the second-most that it has ever received in a single year. Five Tech teams earned the honor in 2008-09 and four squads received the recognition in 2009-10, 2012-13 and 2014-15.

“We’re very proud of the academic achievements of our women’s cross country, golf, men’s swimming & diving and volleyball programs,” Georgia Tech director of athletics Todd Stansbury said. “Our mission is to develop young people who will change the world. These recognitions speak to the dedication of our coaches, academic support personnel and student-athletes to achieve that mission.”

APR is an annual scorecard of academic achievement calculated for all Division I sports teams. It measures eligibility, graduation and retention each semester or academic term and provides a clear picture of the academic performance for each team in every sport. The most recent multiyear rates are based on the 2012-13, 2013-14, 2014-15 and 2015-16 academic years.

The NCAA will release the latest full APR data on Wednesday, May 10.
